Vector, High Resolution and Logo File Types Explained

In short, your artwork and logo will need to be submitted as a vector file. Vector files are files that have the following extensions:

  • .AI
  • .EPS
  • .PDF

In order for your custom imprinted product to turn out crisp, clean and just plain awesome we have to start with the correct file type. Understandably so, this can be very confusing. It seems like you should be able to send us any file of your logo and we should be able to print that directly onto your promotional product but this is far from the case. To achieve a high quality imprint, the art files that you send us need to be a specific type so that the imprint doesn't turn out pix-elated and blurry and so that we can print to your specifications. For instance, if you have a logo with 3 colors but to save money you would like to print your logo in one color, we need to be able to edit your file to achieve this.

Let's dive into the different file types:

Raster Files .JPEG, .PNG, .JPG - These file types, also called Raster art, are best used for websites, emails or printed photos of images that don't need to be top quality. This type of file is basically like taking a photo of the image with a camera. It's a flat image that can't be dissected and edited. This type is typically not usable for imprinted products.

Vector files .AI, .EPS, .PDF Vector files are what we are looking for when you send us your logo. This file type is made up of layers and uses mathematical formulas making it flexible for editing. Vector files use the extensions .AI, .EPS, or .PDF and can be resized without losing quality. We can imprint your logo on the side of a semi-truck and it will appear nice and clear. Below you can see the difference. The left not as crisp as the right because it's a low resolution image. Definitely not what you would want on your custom product.

We can sometimes use a raster file for imprinting when we have a high resolution file.

The minimum resolution for imprinted products is 300 dpi (dots per square inch.) A 72 dpi image is fine for adding graphics to a webpage but will be distorted when blown up.

High resolution, low resolution

The good news is we do not expect you to be an expert on graphics so when you place an order with us, we will work with you to ensure we have the best file type for your project. We offer free art services and can often convert your file to a vector file when needed. Our word of advice is to make sure that when you work with a graphic artist on your logo or any artwork, make sure they also send you the vector source file. As long as you have this, the sky's the limit when it comes to customizing products with your logo!
